Tatama Tapaculo

Scytalopus alvarezlopezi

Bird of the month - June

Tapaculos, the mouse-like birds. Have you ever hear about them or seen them in the wild? We tell you more about them.

The Tatama Tapaculo is one of the most recently described tapaculos of Colombia. Also known as the Alto Pizones this tapaculo was formally discovered in 2017. Endemic of the western slope of the western mountain range in the pacific side, the Tatama tapaculo’s favorite habitat is the cloud and rainy forest, between 1,300 and 1,800 m.a.s.l. Moving fast in the understory and dense vegetation, this species’ mouse-like behavior can be frustrating. The good news is that Diego has mastered the ability to find tapaculos until you really see them… although sometimes we only get a fast glimpse of it.
